USING THE SUPER HAL SETTINGS - OVERVIEW
One of the options that we use in the USPBL is for the "SUPER HAL" settings.
This includes the Super Hal Bullpen, Lineup Subs and Pinch Run/Pinch Hit settings.
I'm not 100% clear as to what happens if these settings are not used by a team. At one time Strat
had stated that the game will still select appropriate players for the situations. However recently I've read
that if the Super Hal settings are used that they must be used by all teams. I now believe what was meant in that first notice was that "if the Super Hal option is not used, then the game will still select appropriate players for the situations." I noticed when playing exhibition games before I set my Super Hal Bullpen up that the game was using relief pitchers in the order they appeared on my Super Hal (which wasn't set up yet). This meant that they were being used in alphabetical order which is how they were entered into the team's roster. Without the Super Hal Bullpen set up, it was still using it.
So I'm pretty sure that a team needs to have their Super Hal settings arranged if you want logic rather than the alphabet used for your bullpen and pinch situations.
Because the Super Hal settings are enormously useful, they will continue to be used.
Thus what I want to address here then is how important it is that you use them.
SUPER HAL SETTINGS - THE HOW TO'S
The Super Hal settings for the Lineups subs and Pinch settings are pretty straight forward and simple, perhaps with a few exceptions.
PINCH RUN/PINCH HIT
Where -- Team menu, Update computer manager, Batters, (bottom) Pinch.....
Very simple. Just slide the players to the top that you want used for each category. You're not likely going to need more than 3-4 players for each so that's all you really need to be concerned with.
LINEUP SUBS
Where - Team menu, Update default lineups, (bottom) Super Hal....
Note that with the lineups subs, this is used only when replacing injured players at the start of the game.
In-game injury replacements cannot be controlled.
Again you will simply slide the players up and down based on who you prefer to play where in the event of an injury. This needs to be done with each lineup. An important note here is that those players appearing in RED are already in the lineup, either at the position in question or elsewhere. If this player is at the top of the sub list, they will still be used as the replacement, with subsequent subs being made to cover that player.
Ex: Paredes is playing 3b. He's listed as the first sub at 1B. If a 1B is needed, it will move Paredes from 3B
to 1B, then replace the 3B, which in turn may cause other subs. And so on. So it's generally best to move
those RED players down in the order unless you know what you're doing.
BULLPEN
Where - Team menu, Update computer manager, Pitchers, (bottom) Super Hal Bullpen....
Okay, this is the biggie. The Super Hal Bullpen will control which relievers are used, when they are used, and how often they are used. And it works surprisingly well.
The drawback is that it encompasses so much that it's very difficult to set up. It utilizes the Score, Outs,
(innings) and Batter type.
Like lineups, you can set up to 50 different situations, though generally I would think from 8-15 will suffice.
I have 12 for my team.
The guide for setting up the Super Hal Bullpen is located in the Strat Help File.
Select SUPER HAL BULLPEN, then SUPER HAL BULLPEN in the sub-menu.
If inclined you should set up your Super Hal Bullpen.
HOWEVER, there is an alternative which makes this much easier while still providing your team with a SUPER HAL BULLPEN.
IMPORTING SUPER HAL LOGIC SETTINGS
The game includes an option to IMPORT COMPUTER MANAGER LOGIC. Here you can import your previous Super Hal settings so you only have to set these up one time. AND if you want, you can actually
IMPORT the Super Hal Bullpen from another team. So you don't have to do that on your own at all.
Whether importing your own Super Hal settings or those of another team you naturally still have to slide the players around to their appropriate places.
Where - Team menu, Copy Computer Manager Logic....
Here you will see the 3 options available to import. It then works the same as importing ballparks....
select the team you're importing from and the team you're importing to.
As stated, you will be importing the basic outline for these settings but you will still need to slide your players around to where you want them
IMPORTING SUPER HAL BULLPEN
If you choose to import the Super Hal Bullpen from another team, you should obviously have their permission.
I've always offered my team's Super Hal Bullpen settings to anyone that wants it.
Here's how it works:
You use the Copy Computer Manager Logic from my team to your's.
I have 12 lines used, from A to J. Use the ORDER on the Left.
While there's all kinds of factors used for each, all you need to be concerned with is the BOX on top
that describes the situation.
A = Closer vs LH B= Close vs RH C = Setup vs LH and so on to others further down....
E = First relief vs LH...... H = Blowout loss .......... down to J= Late but close
Using these situations, you slide your pitchers to how and when you want them used.
This will not only help in controlling how and when they're used, but how often they are used.
If you notice certain pitchers are being used too much, go into they Super Hal Bullpen and slide them
further down the list, or you could make them ineligible if you don't want them used at all.
Or if they aren't getting enough use, you can slide them to the top of a category or two.
